KARUR: A total 484 development works have been completed during the current year in the district at an estimated cost of Rs.7.30 crore from out of the Central Government funds, according to Karur MP K.C. Palanisamy. Chairing the Vigilance and Awareness meeting on Central Government projects and works being carried out across his constituency in Karur recently, Mr. Palanisamy said that a sum of Rs.20.79 crore had been allotted for development works for the current year. While 484 works have been completed, he urged the officials of various departments to expedite the remaining works. From out of the Rs.22.93 crore sanctioned and allotted for Karur during 2006-07, 1,260 works worth Rs.6.83 crore have been completed. Under the Special Component plan, 30 works were taken up and completed for which 11,492 tonnes of rice was distributed along with wages. Under the Swarna Jayanthi Gram Swarozgar Yojana, revolving fund was sanctioned to a total of 339 women SHGs while funds to carry on economic development and income generation activities to 52 groups were given. Also, 32 persons were given individual loans, 1,811 women benefited from skill development courses at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.38 crore. Group housesUnder the Indra Awaz Yojana, 1,333 group houses at an estimated cost of Rs.5.01 crore were completed while another 296 houses were upgraded into pucca houses at a cost of Rs.36.87 crore. Through the MP Local Are Development Fund, 48 works in Karur district and 20 works in Tiruchi district areas of the Karur constituency have been completed at a cost of Rs. 1.85 crore. Through the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, 93 drinking water works to the tune of Rs.3.82 crore have already been completed, Mr. Palanisamy added. Under the Total Sanitation Programme, 11,663 individual lavatories, 576 school lavatories, 372 anganwadi lavatories, 96 women sanitary complexes and 10 rural sanitation marts have been constructed and completed. Collector T.N. Venkatesh detailed the ongoing works and the various stages at which the works have been completed. The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, M. Madhavi, Chairman, District Panchayat, Poovai Ramesh Babu, and others participated in the meeting.
