CHANDIGARH: Focusing on the role of women in tourism, the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S. F. Rodrigues on Thursday inaugurated a photo exhibition by 42 women photographers at the Government Museum and Art Gallery here. A total of 85 exhibits are on display and the overlying theme is “Chandigarh in the monsoon”. These photographs were selected after holding a photo competition for women. Idea mootedThe idea of organising the contest was mooted by General Rodrigues at a photo competition held for amateur photographers on June 23 this year. He was impressed by a comment written in the visitors’ book by the lone woman photographer who had participated in the competition. “A remarkable collection -- unfortunately with very little work by the fair sex! Can we have another competition, on the monsoon, only for the ladies?” he remarked. Gen Rodrigues said women could play a significant role in programmes launched by the Chandigarh Administration to check child abuse and reduce the maternal mortality rate. He also presented awards to the winners of the photo competition.
