Government a total failure: Sudheeran

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran has described the Left Democratic Front government in the State as a complete failure.

Mr. Sudheeran, speaking at the conclusion of a 24-hour fast led by Kerala Congress (Jacob) leaders T.M. Jacob and Johnny Nellore to highlight the “corruption and misrule” of the government before the Secretariat on Thursday, said that only two courses of action were open to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. One was to act firmly and redeem the promises he had made to the people. The other was to admit defeat and quit.

‘People fed up’

He wanted the truth in the Ponmudi land issue to be brought to light. The Munnar eviction mission had failed and even the team which led it was orphaned. The District Collector who led it had been replaced. Mission head K. Suresh Kumar was yet to get a new posting. If this was the situation how could officers with self-respect work under the government, he asked.

Agitations normally took place during the fag end of a government’s term. But in the case of the present government, the people were already fed up with it. The government’s reputation which was at the peak during its first anniversary suffered considerably just four months after that. He asked the Chief Minister to ponder over it. The people would not tolerate the Pariyaram model of police rule. He wanted the Pariyaram election to be cancelled and fresh elections held under the High Court’s supervision.

Mr. Jacob vowed to continue the agitation till the government ended its corruption and misrule. Mr. Nellore warned that the fast was only the beginning of a massive people’s stir.

United Democratic Front leaders K.K. Shaju, MLA, the former Minister Babu Divakaran,, P.T. Thomas and K.B. Ganesh Kumar, MLA, who offered felicitation, said the Kerala Congress (Jacob)’s protest reflected the people’s feelings.
