Chandigarh: Opposing the proposed hike in power tariff, the Punjab unit of the BJP, an alliance partner in the ruling coalition, on Thursday demanded that the revised tariff should not be implemented at all. A BJP Legislature Party meeting opposed the recent hike of 8.4 per cent to 12 per cent in power tariff for different consumers as directed by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission, party general secretary Kamal Sharma said here. “The hike in power tariff is ill-timed, uncalled for and unjustified,” he said and demanded that the revision in the electricity tariff “should not be implemented at all.” It was the unanimous opinion that the proposed hike would “very seriously affect” the common man in the State and also give a “stunning blow” to the already “crippling” small and medium-scale industries, the party said in a statement. The BJP said due to the “inflationary policy” of the UPA Government at the Centre, the articles of daily use have already shot up affecting all sections of the society. Mr. Sharma said the recently elected president of the Punjab unit of BJP, Rajinder Bhandari, on Thursday appointed office-bearers of the party. iThose appointed vice-presidents were Vijay Sampla, Vinod Sharma, Surjit Jyani, Manjit Singh Rai and Virender Kaur Thandi. Bhandari also appointed two general secretaries Ashwani Kumar and Kamal Sharma. PTI
