Congress to hold village office dharna

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala will flag off the party’s third phase of agitation seeking Forest Minister Benoy Viswom’s resignation in connection with the Ponmudi land deal.

The KPCC, in a statement here on Thursday, said Congress workers would stage dharna in front of 1,478 village offices in the State and organise marches seeking the Minister’s resignation. Mr. Chennithala would inaugurate the agitation in front of the Neeleswaram village office in Kasaragod. The KPCC has already rejected the government decision to order a Vigilance probe into the Ponmudi land deal.

(Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan had on Monday announced a Vigilance inquiry into all transactions connected with the sale of the Merchiston tea estate near Ponmudi in the district to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).)

The Congress and the United Democratic Front (UDF) have been staging several forms of agitation seeking Mr. Viswom’s resignation.

On September 22, UDF activists had staged a dharna in front of the Collectorates and the Secretariat, followed by a Congress dharna in all 140 Assembly constituencies in the State on September 24. The UDF leadership has announced a dharna in front of 53 taluk offices in the State on October 4.
