Pakistani crew of Den Den may return home on Monday

The Eritrean ship sank off Tannirbhavi coast on June 23

MANGALORE: Three members of the Pakistani crew rescued from the Eritrean vessel mv Den Den, which sank off Tannirbhavi coast near here in the Arabian Sea on June 23, are likely to return to their country on October 1.

Tuesday signalled the end of a long period of official confinement for 14 members, 13 from Eritrea and one from Sri Lanka, of the crew of 21, as they finally headed to their countries.

The crew of 21 was put up in a private lodging after it was discharged from hospitals following the June 23 incident.

Due to official restrictions on their movement, the members of the crew were forced to live a life of confinement in the lodging.

The sailors, including the captain, Abhram Kwaw, were hence lodged in a hotel until such time that the procedural requirements such as getting fresh official documents issued in their name were met.

Mr. Kwaw, however, had no grouse against this forced incarceration when he told presspersons that the officials and the police were merely doing their duty.

Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao told The Hindu that four more members of the crew of Den Den, three Ghanaians and one Sudanese, returned to their country on Thursday.

“Atlantic Shipping Private Limited, shipping agent of Den Den, has met the procedural requirements with regard to these 18 sailors and is working to ensurr that the papers of the remaining Pakistani sailors are ready,” he said.
