BANGALORE: Bangalore, India’s aeronautical capital, will shortly play host to a conference on helicopters. To be organised by the Bangalore-based Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies and Industries with support from defence public sector enterprise Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL), the conference will be held at the HAL Convention Centre here. The two-day conference starts on October 30, with Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major, who is himself a helicopter pilot, as the chief guest. While there will be no demonstrations of helicopters during the conference, what will be presented are technical papers on rotary winged aircraft design, technical know-how and aspects of their manufacture. DifficultiesAspects such as the difficulties in integrating weapons on these highly unstable platforms, the process of turning a successful design into its production phase and how to significantly improve time between overhauls and related topics will also be discussed. Sources told The Hindu that the idea behind the conference was not only to promote interest in helicopters, but also to expose HAL’s designers and engineers, and others connected with the aviation industry to the latest technological advances in design and manufacture of these machines. “Whatever knowledge that we have in India is consigned to a few people and once they retire or move on it is gone. We want to broad-base this knowledge on helicopter design and manufacture.” The Conference will be Bangalore’s second with an exclusive helicopter show. A ‘Helicopter and Equipment Exhibition Asia 1995 — Hexa ‘95’ was held here, which was by the rotary wing and for the rotary wing, and held between October 30 and November 1, 1995. Worldwide, exclusive helicopter shows are few, with Heli-Tech (at Redhill, U.K.) and the HAI (Helicopter Association International) and HAA (Helicopter Association of America) organised shows in the U.S. being significant.
