This Day That Age
The Railway Board has confirmed the conclusion reached by its technical mission, which had visited Europe recently, that the Indian Railways should adopt the A.C. system for electrification. The future railway electrification in India will be done on the A.C. 50 cycle system, which is in vogue in a number of countries, including France, Belgium, Turkey, Portugal, Japan, Britain and Russia. The Board has decided that 1,373 miles of route should be electrified during the Second Plan period. Railway electrification in India had started in 1925 and the total electrified route mileage at present is 240. After inviting global tenders, the Railway Board has chosen the French National Railways as technical associates to supervise the electrification programme. An order has already been placed for 50 A.C. electric locomotives with a combine of European firms. The first electric train in the Eastern region is expected to run in November this year. It is proposed to electrify the Tambaram-Villupuram main line of the Southern Railway, the Howrah-Moghalsarai section on the Eastern Railway, Asansol-to-Rourkela and Rourkela-to-Bara Jamda sections of the South-Eastern Railway, the suburban sections around Calcutta and the Igatpuri-Bhusaval sections of the Central Railway.
