Corrections and clarifications

The fourth paragraph in a report “Film on Sputnik-1 brings back memories” (September 27, 2007) was: “He recalled the decision made by the former Nikita Khrushchev on the USSR building the first world’s first Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile R-7 and its later adoption to launch the world’s first artificial satellite.” It was an editing error. It should have been “He recalled the decision made by the then Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev ….”

The same report wrongly said that Soviet leader Joseph Stalin signed a decree in February 1955 that led to the launching of the Sputnik. Stalin died of a stroke on March 5, 1953. A decree of the Soviet government No. 149-88ss formally authorising the development of an artificial satellite was signed on January 30, 1956. It called for the development of an unoriented satellite, designated Object D, during 1957-1958. The spacecraft’s mass was limited to 1,000-1,400 kilograms, relying on the capabilities of the R-7 ballistic missile.
