Paris: Chancellor Angela Merkel became the first German head of state to officially receive the Dalai Lama when she held an hour- long meeting with him in Berlin on Wednesday. “The Chancellor paid tribute to the Dalai Lama as a religious leader and assured him of support for his efforts to preserve the cultural identity of Tibet and for his peaceful quest for religious and cultural autonomy,” said her spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm afterwards. He reiterated that the spiritual head of the Tibetan people had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and that he was not calling for independence from China. The run-up to the meeting was marred by tension as China asked Germany to cancel it and denounced the Dalai Lama as a separatist seeking to undermine China. Chinese authorities summoned Germany’s Ambassador to Beijing to protest the Dalai Lama’s invitation to the chancellery and pulled out of an event with German Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries at the weekend. The German Justice Ministry said Chinese officials had also cancelled a meeting with German counterparts on patent right protection. The influential daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung at the weekend spoke of “a crisis” in ties between the two countries and said Ms. Merkel had gone against the advice of senior officials in pursuing the meeting, just weeks after she visited China. The Dalai Lama, in an interview with the same German newspaper, reiterated that he was not seeking independence for Tibet, but “a real form of autonomy”.
