COLOMBO: At least 28 persons, 24 cadres of the Tamil cadres, two civilians and a soldier were killed in clashes in the north in the last 24 hours, said the Defence Ministry. Accounts from both sides suggest intensification of fighting in the northern sector, where the LTTE is in control in parts of the region, over the past few days. Indications are the clashes are occurring along the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs). Each side accuses the other of attempts to trespass into its “territory” as recognised by the Norwegian-brokered 2002 Cease Fire Agreement (CFA). The Ministry claimed that troops retaliated an LTTE attempt to advance at the Nagarkovil FDLs killing five terrorists. “LTTE elements have intensified minor scale infiltration attempts at the northern defences at Nagarkovil, Kilaly and Muhamalai recently, anticipating surge in violence targeting strategic military locations. In subsequent search operations conducted in the area, troops recovered an LTTE identification tag and a T-56 assault riffle,” said the Ministry. It said nine cadres were also killed in clashes at separate locations in general area Periyathampane, Vavuniya and Eluthumaduwal, Jaffna. The military accused the Tigers of carrying out “a cowardly claymore attack” killing two civilians and injuring 17 at Chunnakkam in Jaffna on Thursday morning. It said the explosion took place at the Chunnakkam marketplace in Jaffna. The bomb was planted inside a bicycle parking space near the marketplace and the target might have been a police vehicle parked nearby.
