Arvind Savur enters semifinals

BANGALORE: Veteran Arvind Savur romped into the semifinals of the State-ranking billiards championship with an emphatic 3-0 win over Sohail Jairaj at the KSBA Hall here on Thursday.

Savur won 152-104, 151-118, 150-105.

Earlier, Savur quelled the challenge of former champion B.V.S. Murthy in a group league match. Murthy had a miserable day as he went down to D. Rajkumar in the quarterfinals.

Also advancing into the last four was defending champion B. Bhaskar, who outclassed M. Lakshman and Duncan Mackenzie, who put it across Balaji Reddy in straight frames.

Senior billiards: League (best of five frames, 150 points): Duncan Mackenzie bt G. Kishore Kumar 151-65, 150-104, 150-94; Arvind Savur bt B.V.S. Murthy 152-94, 151-73, 151-26; B.S. Suresh bt Nadeem Azeez 151-140, 108-150, 151-87, 151-83.

Quarterfinals: Savur bt Sohail Jairaj 152-104, 151-118, 150-105; Bhaskar bt M. Lakshman 151-51, 151-88, 151-49; Duncan bt Balaji Reddy 151-69, 150 (B-58)-132, 150-86; D. Raj Kumar bt Murthy 145-152, 151-59,152-33, 150-62.

Ladies snooker (knock-out, best of three frames): S. Shilpa w/o T.V. Sridevi; Uma Nagaraj bt Indira Hegde 53-25, 53-18.

Semifinal league (best of five frames): M. Chitra bt Shilpa 81-03, 53-29, 65-44; Uma bt Indira Gowda 41-29, 58-45, 73-25.

Anup Sridhar starts training

The country’s top shuttler, Anup Sridhar, has begun training in Denmark under the legendary Morten Frost Hansen for six weeks. He will soon be joined the promising junior, Anand Pawar. The two players, who are the wards of the Tata-Padukone Badminton Academy (TPBA), are being sponsored for the trip by TPBA.

Both Anup and Anand will be based Aarhus, where Frost is heading the Aarhus Badminton Training Centre. Anup will also play in a couple of European tournaments including the Danish and the French Opens.

Anup, ranked World No. 28 after his good display in the World championship in Kuala Lumpur, will also compete in Danish Elite badminton league, representing Vendyssel Club.

Neo Sports’s new initiative

Robin Uthappa and Zaheer Khan, launched the video on demand and live streaming service on pay-per-view basis on www.neosports.tv , a service from the Neo Sports Broadcast Pvt. Limited here on Thursday.

Consumers can avail this service through various packages on a per event basis @ Rs. 5, highlight every half-an-hour @ Rs. 30, day pass @ Rs. 50 and series pass (seven ODIs and one Twenty20) @ Rs. 150. The consumers can also subscribe to an all access live streaming service @ Rs.100 per match with all other services thrown in.

Bishop Cotton triumphs

Bishop Cotton Girls School defeated St. Charles High School 21-3 and claimed the title in the Kensri Futures inter-school under-16 basketball championship in Bangalore. Delhi Public School finished third in the championship.
