Mumbai: A day before its 79th AGM, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Shashank Manohar has been elected the BCCI President-elect and will succeed Sharad Pawar in September 2008. The decks were cleared for Manohar’s election after three associations from the Central Zone — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh — proposed his name. Mr. Manohar is the President of the Vidharbha Cricket Association (VCA). His term will expire in September 2010, but he can continue as President for a third year in the event of Central Zone not opting for a change then. This means that Mr. Manohar will be in-charge when the ICC World Cup will be held in the sub-continent in 2011. “The President’s post is allotted to the zone,” said Prof. Ratnakar Shetty, Chief Administrative Officer, BCCI. Free of electionsBy amending its constitution at a special general body meeting some time ago and incorporating a by-law for the President-elect’s post, the BCCI has ensured that its AGM’s until September 2011 will be free of elections for the President’s post. Mr. Pawar will step down as BCCI President after he is officially nominated ICC Vice-President in July 2008. He will be replaced by Chirayu Amin as acting President for three months. Through a constitutional amendment the BCCI has already endorsed a two-year term for its principal office-bearers — President, Secretary, Jt. Secretary and Treasurer and also for the senior and junior national selection committees. The Vice-Presidents Messrs. Amin (West), Lalit Modi (North), Rajiv Shukla (East), Dayanand Narvekar (South) would continue till September 2009, but Central Zone will have to nominate one next September with Mr. Manohar taking charge as President. Granting pardonThe BCCI AGM to be held on Friday is likely to name the Chairman of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and deliberate, in the event of an affiliated unit raising the sensitive issue of granting pardon to fifty odd players who have aligned with the Indian Cricket League (ICL) promoted twenty20 competition. A little over a month ago, Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) President Inderjit Singh Bindra urged the BCCI to consider reprieve to the ICL badge players and give them time to return to mainstream cricket. HCA in no moodThe Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), which has suffered the most, though is no mood to pardon the cricketers and is likely to reject suggestions for reconciliation. “We have sufficient players to represent Hyderabad at all levels. They have decided to leave and let it remain so,” said Shivlal Yadav, Secretary, HCA. Decisions taken at the Working Committee meetings and President’s appointments will be ratified and reports of the Secretary and Treasurer and the Auditor will be placed for adoption at the meeting. Issues related to players’ contract, appointment of a coach for the national team and the Indian Premier League (IPL) are bound to figure at the meeting.
