EASY TO USE: Hand-held device to calculate electricity consumption charges.

COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is expected to complete the second phase of its computerisation in the region shortly.

According to a TNEB official the programme, Project BEST (Billing of Energy Services by TNEB), covers Low Tension billing, collection and accounting.

He explained that in areas where computerisation had been completed, the assessor entered the reading in a portable hand held device on the consumer’s premises. The device would compute the amount and this would be entered in the meter card provided to the consumer. Each such device could accommodate data relating to about 10,000 service connections.

When the device was connected to the local server at the section office of the TNEB, the data would be uploaded to the local server and then to the main server at the Data Centre here. This made the process more efficient, reducing the workload and minimising the consumer’s wait at the counter. Applications for new power connections that were received at the field offices are also registered and processed online. He said that such computerisation took off in the region about two years ago. In the first phase, an investment of Rs. 5.55 crore was made in the urban areas covering corporations and municipalities in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris districts and a municipality in the Erode district. The computerisation has benefited nearly six lakh consumers in the areas.

The second phase, covering non-urban areas in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris district and a part of Erode district, was expected to be completed shortly.
