There are 34 seats in the zilla panchayat Congress, with 23 members, has a clear majority DAVANGERE: Y. Ramappa and H. Manjappa (both Congress) have been elected president and vice-president respectively of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat. They were elected unopposed in the elections held on Thursday. The posts were vacant following the resignation of H.B. Manjappa and Nagarathnamma a few days ago at the behest of the party high command. Shamanur Shivashankarappa, MLA and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee treasurer, instructed all Congress members to support Dr. Ramappa and Mr. Manjappa .M.B. Dyaberi, Deputy Commissioner of Davangere district and Election Officer, declared the results. SeatsThere are 34 seats in the zilla panchayat. The Congress, with 23 members, has a clear majority. The Janata Dal (Secular) has nine seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party one each. Dr. Ramappa told presspersons after the elections that he would strive hard for the comprehensive growth of Davangere district. AmenitiesHis priority would be to provide basic amenities such as water supply, roads and better sanitation facilities in villages. He said that he would introduce a new system called “ZP in villages” and would take the entire administration of the zilla panchayat to remote villages to address the problems of the people at their doorstep. Dr. Ramappa said that community toilets would be built in every village.He said that he would also streamline the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in the district.
