Disabled Rights Group to hold day-long fast

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Members of the Disabled Rights Group along with other non-government organisations will hold a day-long fast on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi to protest against inability of the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to act on the Union Cabinet-approved ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.

“The Union Cabinet had on March this year given its approval for signing and ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It is almost six months now, but the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has not acted on the mandate. Worse still, there is no clear cut answer or explanation from the Ministry as to what is the real reason for the delay.

“If the Ministry cannot even act on a mandate given to it by none other than the Union Cabinet for as long as six months, then I guess the Minister Meira Kumar should resign,” said Disabled Rights Group convenor Javed Abidi at a press conference here on Wednesday.

Nationwide campaign

Mr. Abidi said they would also launch a nationwide campaign on October 2 to create greater awareness on the issue and exert pressure on the Government.
