Major facelift for Safdarjung

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Safdarjung Hospital, one of the biggest government hospitals in Asia, has initiated the process for a multi-crore facelift.

The hospital, which over the years has grown into one of the largest government tertiary-level multi-disciplinary health care institutions, plans to re-develop its old structure, construct several multi-storey buildings in its place, and bring in better medical equipment. Also, it has asked for increased allocation of doctors to start and sustain this ambitious expansion plan. “The hospital now is a single-storey building with limited accommodation for patients. We understand that in the space we occupy we can have several towers which will allow us more space for treatment. We have proposed a multi-crore re-developmental programme and are waiting for a response from the Planning Commission,” said Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Jagdish Prasad at a press conference here.

Taking into consideration the increasing patient load that the hospital has to take on, the hospital authorities are hoping to increase the bed strength from 1,531 to 3,000. “This in itself is a huge exercise and we will not only have to ensure adequate space but also enough manpower to start and sustain this bed strength. While the population has increased in the cities, we haven’t been able to keep pace with the needs of the people and this increased bed strength is to ensure that we can offer a bed to every patient in need. We are also looking into the possibility of adding to our existing manpower strength. With our plans to increase the bed strength, we will need to have more doctors to take care of the increased patient inflow,” added Dr. Prasad.

“The hospital is also planning to have a sports injury centre and has already initiated the process of bringing in more equipment to facilitate easier and more fruitful patient care,” said Additional Medical Superintendent Sudhir Chandra.
