First IT unit at SEZs nearing completion INDUSTRY DOSSIER

Santosh Patnaik

VISAKHAPATNAM: The first unit in the two IT-specific Special Economic Zones at the picturesque Rushikonda will be operational in two to three months. The building of Symbiosys Technologies is in advanced stage of completion with a built-up area of 1.05 lakh square feet. The Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority has developed the layouts for the twin SEZs overlooking the sea after Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation earmarked 100 and 40 acres on two separate hillocks. “Every acre allotted for IT units in the SEZs will have an employment for 100 and the units allotted space are in various stages of construction,” APIIC Chief General Manager B.S. Naidu told The Hindu. The allotment of plots at the SEZs is almost over due to the announcement of the State Government to develop Visakhapatnam as a tier-II IT city and the hype over emergence of Rushikonda as `Andhra’s Silicon Valley.’ Several mega housing projects are coming up with an estimated investment of over Rs.5,000 crores in and around Rushikonda.

Local unit

“Ours is a locally registered IT firm with specialisation in Xpress solutions online and office in the United States, “ Symbiosys Technologies Managing Director Naresh Kumar said. The unit, which was first registered as a 100 per EoU in 2001 at the Special Economic Zone, Duvvada has some Fortune 500 companies as its clients.

Brisk activity is going on at the SEZs with Satyam Technologies beginning civil work for its training centre near Thotlakonda on an area of 70 acres. Sources said after Symbiosys Technologies, Sankhya Technologies, Navayuga, Color Chips and other software companies would start their operations in the twin SEZs.

The APIIC is hopeful that the annual turnover from IT companies functioning in Visakhapatnam, which is around Rs.200 crores, will go up to Rs. 900 crores in next two years. The APIIC has as of now acquired 2,524 acres for promoting IT Parks with 45 plots of which 27 have been allotted. Two incubation centres will come up near All India Radio and Yendada for plug in and plug operators to encourage first generation entrepreneurs. All the units will have a projected employment of 14,000.
