BANGALORE: The Basava Prashasti for the year 2006 will be conferred on the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy at a function here on Friday. Kannada and Culture Secretary I.M. Vittala Murthy told presspersons on Wednesday that from this year, the purse had been raised to Rs. 10 lakh, from Rs. 1.5 lakh. A bust of Basavanna, a plaque, and a shawl would also be presented. A committee headed by Kannada and Culture Minister H.S. Mahadeva Prasad and comprising Sri Siddarama Sharanaru of Beldal Math; academic Purushotham Bilimale; the former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, M.S. Thimmappa; and the former Minister, Leeladevi R. Prasad, was constituted to select the person for the award. The Basava Prashasti, instituted in 2000, was first presented to Saraswathi Gora, freedom fighter, who died in August at the age of 94. She had been a crusader against untouchability and caste system. The late educationist H. Narasimhaiah was given the award in 2001.
