Visakhapatnam
13 merged panchayats exempted from hike City divided into 15 zones and 18 sub-zones VISAKHAPATNAM: The non-residential property tax hike that will come into force on October 1 is expected to improve the revenues of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation by more than Rs.13 crores during the second half of the current year. While the current tax for the commercial and business establishments is Rs.10.25 crores from 52,236 assessments in the erstwhile corporation area, it is projected to go up to Rs.23.86 crores after the revision. The State Government issued GO 635 on August 27 effecting property tax hike. The GVMC has divided the city into 15 zones and 18 sub-zones and decided the rates for hike. After considering objections and an informal meeting with corporators the rates of hike have been decided upon. The hike varies from 200 per cent to 75 per cent. For Gopalapatnam the hike proposed is 200 per cent and brought down to 150 per cent, for Gajuwaka from 100 to 75 per cent and rest of the areas from 150 per cent to 125 per cent. However, the main commercial areas are exempted from the exercise in which the proposed hikes have been reduced. The total hike comes to around 133 per cent. The 32 panchayats that have been merged in the corporation forming GVMC are excluded from the hike as they were brought to the corporation tax level recently. The hike has been decided upon after a scientific survey covering 20 per cent of the assessments, says Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Y.Sai Sreekant. To effect the increase, special notices will be issued informing property owners of the hike and how it was worked out. If there were any objections they would be taken up for disposal after which demand notices will be issued.
