Showing protest: Seats at the Tirupur Municipal Council remain vacant on Thursday following a walkout by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors over the implementation of Sethusamudram project. TIRUPUR: Tirupur Municipality on Thursday decided to terminate the contract awarded to a private firm for maintaining street lights in all 52 wards in the town. The municipal council meeting presided over by Chairman K. Selvaraj passed a resolution to terminate the contract with immediate effect. According to him, the local body awarded a contract to Sabari Electricals, Chennai, for maintaining the street lights in the municipality for three years since March 2006 through an open tender. The contractor failed to appoint adequate workers to maintain the lights and even to turn on and off of the lights. Further, the contractor had not used quality equipment which resulted in frequent repairs. Mr. Selvaraj said the municipality had issued notices 18 times to the contractor to rectify the faults. Despite many warnings the firm had not taken any steps in this regard. There were many complaints over the dysfunctional street lights. The Municipal Chairman said the municipality staff would take care of the maintenance till a new contractor was appointed. A total of Rs. 5.4 lakh was allocated to purchase equipment. Former MLA and councillor C. Sivasamy asked the administration to levy a penalty to the contractor for not adhering to the conditions laid down in the contract. Councillors from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were involved in a heated argument over the implementation of Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project by dredging the Adams Bridge off Rameswaram. While the AIADMK members led by Mr. Sivasamy staged a walkout in protest against the remarks of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Lord Ram, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors did not join them. DMK councillor S. Palanisamy condemned former BJP MP Ram Vilas Vedanti for allegedly issuing a ‘fatwa’ against Mr. Karunanidhi. The Chief Minister had not insulted any religion but had only expressed his anguish over the delay in the implementation of the project, Mr. Selvaraj said. The Congress, the Communist Party of India and the CPI(M) councillors urged the Government to implement the Sethusamudram project for the welfare of the State not yielding to the pressure by fundamental organisations. They said they would support the October 1 bandh called by the Democratic Progressive Alliance.
