TIRUCHI: Two youths drowned in the Cauvery and another was reported missing during a ritual at the Ayyalamman bathing ghat as part of the annual Urs festival of the Hazrath Natharvalli dargah early on Thursday.
The incident took place when devotees were fetching water for ceremonial washing of the tombs of Sufi saints at the dargah around 1 a.m.
According to eyewitnesses, the youths were trying to rescue another person caught in the swirling waters.
Bodies recovered
Fire and Rescue Service personnel recovered the bodies. One of them was identified as Abdul Malik (20) of Old Goodshed Road in the city. The missing youth was identified as Shanawaz.
