HYDERABAD: Police on Thursday arrested 19 youngsters from the villages of Jintupally and Mantatti in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district in connection with the attacks on two prayers halls.
Mobs damaged these prayers halls on Wednesday reportedly in retaliation to the attack on the Twenty20 victory procession taken out by ABVP activists in Tandur town two days ago.
Already, four persons were arrested for attacking the victory procession. Hyderabad range DIG E. Eswara Reddy, who had been camping in Tandur for the past two days, told The Hindu that pickets were posted at sensitive points in Tandur town and surrounding localities.
Trouble started after a group of youths attacked some persons taking part in the Twenty20 victory procession after Monday midnight.
The next day, the ABVP and the BJP activists began an agitation accusing the police of failing to prevent the attack and arrest the culprits behind the incident. They called for bandh in Tandur on Wednesday in protest against the attack.
While enforcing the bandh, two groups clashed and pelted stones at each other. Angry mobs pulled down a prayer hall in Jintupally of nearby Yalal mandal and damaged another one in Mantatti of Basheerabad mandal.
Tandur MLA M. Narayana Rao held discussions with both the groups requesting them to remain calm. The DIG said the situation was under control.
