VIJAYAWADA: Planning the menu of children in the age group of 2-3 years is, probably, the most difficult task for mothers. Dietician and nutritionist J.K. Tulasi spoke on ‘Nutrition and developing healthy eating habits among 2-3 year-old children’, organised by Bloomingdale Play School and Day Care.
Ms. Tulasi impressed upon the mothers the importance of making the food served to children attractive. It must be served in a pleasant environment. The child must be able to enjoy the food and it should not become a kind of torture for him or her.
If the child was force-fed, it might ultimately lead to the child developing a permanent aversion to food, she said. Many children of the age group of 2-3 years seemed to hate normal food.
Finicky kids had strong opinions on what they should eat and would be happy surviving on chocolates and ice creams. Such children would also be obsessed with junk foods like potato chips and soft drinks, she said.
Mothers could, instead, try preparing some interesting foods as children would pick up foods that appear attractive. “So it is our job as parents to give the right thing,” she pointed out.
