BJP Ministers will meet on October 1 Party emergency meeting tomorrow BANGALORE: The latest political developments in Karnataka that now stand as a stumbling block between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its date with power have caught the party off guard. BJP vice-president and Karnataka in-charge Yashwant Sinha is expected to arrive in Bangalore in the next few days to oversee the damage-control exercise. This is in the wake of developments that have come in the way of transfer of power to the party that is scheduled for October 3. Bolt from the blueThe decision of former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) president H. D. Deve Gowda to drop his proposal for talks on the issue with BJP leaders in Delhi has come as a bolt from the blue. The BJP think-tank, comprising senior leaders and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), went into consultations soon after Mr. Deve Gowda made his stand public. The BJP has decided hold a meeting of its Ministers on October 1, attended by Mr. Sinha, to find a solution to the political crisis sparked by Mr. Gowda’s statement that a “congenial” atmosphere was a precondition for talks. With BJP Minister B. Sriramulu filing an attempt-to-murder petition against Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in Bellary, the situation was not congenial for talks, Mr. Deve Gowda said. The proposed meeting will also discuss all the contentious issues raised by Mr. Deve Gowda, including allegations that the Janata Dal (Secular) was being humiliated by the BJP for the past 20 months. Coordination panel meetingBJP spokesperson S. Suresh Kumar told The Hindu that the party had demanded that a meeting of the coordination committee of the coalition partners headed by the Chief Minister be convened soon after the municipal polls on September 29, and build a congenial atmosphere for the proposed talks as well as transfer of power. The BJP has also convened an emergency meeting of its prominent leaders and office-bearers on September 29. The Sriramulu episode will be its main issue of discussion. Mr. Suresh Kumar said that the party would get a report from its Bellary district unit. “Based on the report, we will decide the action to be taken with regard to Mr. Sriramulu.” Focus on pollsDespite being sent into a tizzy with these developments, the party has decided to remain focussed on the municipal polls. Any damage-control exercise would be initiated only after the elections. He denied the charges that the BJP had humiliated the Janata Dal (Secular), and claimed that it had been cooperating with its ally in the past 20 months.
