Judgment copies not yet ready

Staff Reporter

MUMBAI: The special TADA court here on Thursday postponed the date for handing over copies of the judgment to the accused in the 1993 blasts case till further notice.

This came a day after the Supreme Court criticised subordinate courts for pronouncing judgment without handing over copies of the same to the accused.

Film actor Sanjay Dutt was asked to appear before the court on Thursday.

There was speculation that a copy of the judgment would be given to him. Special judge P.D. Kode did not give a date for any of the accused to be present to collect the judgment.

Earlier, the court had announced that the accused would start getting copies of the judgment from September 14.

However, it mentioned that the enormity of the judgment would make it difficult to get over 100 copies ready within the stipulated time. The judgment is likely to run into a few thousand pages.

The delivery of the judgment began on September 12, 2006.Sanjay Dutt and 14 others accused in the 1993 blasts case were granted bail by the apex court as they had not received copies of the judgment.

Advocate Farhana Shah, representing Sanjay Dutt, said he did not appear before the court on Thursday.
