Dismiss DMK government: BJP

NEW DELHI: Charging DMK leaders with “instigating violence” against BJP cadres and attacking its headquarters in Chennai, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday demanded the dismissal of the Karunanidhi government.

Talking to newsmen after submitting a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here, BJP president Rajnath Singh said: “A situation of constitutional machinery breakdown prevails in Tamil Nadu. Ministers instigated, provoked and also led attacks on the BJP headquarters as well as cadres. Nothing short of the dismissal of Karunanidhi government will satisfy us.” Demanding that DMK Ministers in the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre be dismissed, the BJP chief sought security for the life and property, including that of the opposition, during the October 1 bandh called by the DMK in support of the Sethusamudram project.

Apologise

Mr. Singh also demanded that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi apologise for his statement on Lord Ram.

The BJP delegation was led by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, L.K. Advani, and included senior leaders Jaswant Singh, M. Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj, Vijay Kumar Malhotra and Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Protest meeting

Later, addressing a protest meeting at the Rajghat, Mr. Singh said if the Centre could not dismiss the Karunanidhi government, then it should not fault the people for the impression that it was party to the statements of the DMK leader on Lord Ram.

BJP workers raised slogans against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Mr. Singh said that those who “do not love” Lord Ram should not attend the Ram Lila celebrations in Delhi.
