Kunte shares fifth spot

NEW DELHI: Indian challenge faded further in the Asian chess championship following the defeats of G. N. Gopal and Grandmaster Neelotpal Das in the ninth round at Cebu City in the Philippines on Thursday.

Abhijit Kunte heads in the 12-member Indian pack with six points. He shares the fifth spot with six others.

The results (ninth round, involving Indians): Wang Hao (Chn, 6.5) bt G. N. Gopal (5.5); Zhao Jianchao (Chn, 6) drew with Abhijit Kunte (6); Le Quang Liem (Vie, 6) bt Neelotpal Das (5.5); G. Rohit (5.5) drew with Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Phi, 5.5); Sandipan Chanda (5.5) bt Tsegmed Batchuluun (Mgl, 5); Shen Yang (Chn, 4.5) lost to Surya Shekhar Ganguly (5.5); Deepan Chakkravarthy (5.5) bt Parimarjan Negi (4.5); Eugenio Torry (Phi, 4.5) drew with P. D. S. Girinath (4.5); Ahmad Samhouri (Jor, 3.5) lost to S. Arun Prasad (4.5); M. R. Lalith Babu (3) drew with Weiming Goh (Sin, 3.5); Balgan Bayarmandakh (Mgl, 3.5) bt Lanka Ravi (2.5).
