Consider takeover of IL, BHEL told

Staff Reporter

Report on Palakkad, Kota units sought

PALAKKAD: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Santosh Mohan Deb has said that his Ministry has asked Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to examine the possibility of the takeover of the Palakkad and the Kota units of the Central public sector Instrumentations Limited (IL) and give a report to the government as early as possible.

Talking to The Hindu here on Friday, the Minister said BHEL expressed willingness to use the facility in IL, Palakkad. But the IL corporate management wanted takeover of the whole company. The Palakkad unit was making profit but the Kota unit was running at a huge loss and the company was referred to the BIFR for its revival.

He said the Palakkad unit was supplying equipment to BHEL which wanted more valves and other equipment from here. Since BHEL was going for super critical power projects, more such equipment from the IL was required.

The Minister said the policy of the government was to encourage internal production to meet the requirements of the industries in the country.

Replying to a question on the proposal of the Fluid Control Research Institute (FCRI) to set up research and development activities for automotive flow product, the Minister said the government would consider it favourably. He said the Ministry of Heavy Industries had already formulated an auto policy to establish a global competitor automobile industry in India by 2010.

The Auto fuel policy aimed at addressing the issues of vehicle emission, vehicle testing and auto fuel quality. The use of CNG and LPG increased in the pollution affected areas. In Kerala too, the CNG and LPG would be made available for automobile and the setting up of the LNG Terminal in Kochi would go a long way in this regard, the Minister said.
