Call to fix basic minimum wage
Staff Reporter
KOCHI: INTUC national president G. Sanjeeva Reddy has urged the Union Government to announce a basic minimum wage for labour in the country.
Delivering the inaugural address at the all-India working committee of the Indian National Plantation Workers’ Federation here on Friday, Mr. Reddy said State Governments can make amendments to the minimum wage structure but there should be a minimum ceiling.
“Some have politicised the minimum wage issue by fixing lower wages in the name of attracting industry to their States. The workers suffer when such Governments approve low rates,” he said.
Mr. Reddy said INTUC had demanded a social security net for the unorganised working class sector in the country.
They should be given pension of not less than Rs.5, 000 besides providing medical care to family members.
“We have also requested the Union Government to ensure job guarantee in the proposed legislation for the unorganised sector,” he said.
