Tuticorin: A five-day training in ‘fish processing and value addition’ organised by the Department of Fisheries for fisherwomen concluded here on Friday.
R.S. Ganesan, Assistant Director of Fisheries (Extension and Training), said that the programme was conducted under the Swarnajayanthi Grama Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) scheme with an aim to uplift the economic status of fisherfolks.
K. Ratnakumar, G. Sukumar and S.A. Shanmugam, all associate professors from the Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) here, imparted training to the fishermen in techniques to render value addition to low value fishes like lizard fish, perches and leiognachus.
The procedures involved in the preparation of fish pickles, masala flavoured dry fish, fish wafers, fish cutlet and smoked fish from the low value fishes were elucidated.
The resource persons also explained on the product economics and marketing strategy that were essential to sell the value-added products in the niche segments.
The fisher women were taken out on an exposure visit to the shore laboratory of the FCRI on the last day, to give them a hands-on training in hygienic handling and packaging of fish products.
