PALAKKAD: The Malampuzha Dam Protection Committee has alleged that large number of teak, rubber and other trees are being cut down from the one-acre land evicted in 1996 and handed over to the Water Resources Department adjacent to the Rock Garden in Malampuzha. In a statement on Friday, the committee said the land in question was evicted of encroachment in 1996 and was handed over to the Water Resources Department. Bus stand proposedThere was a proposal to construct a bus stand in the land by the Palakkad Development Authority. The land was again encroached upon. It was evicted by the Revenue Department this June and handed over to the Water Resources Department. But they allegedly allowed felling of trees. Committee secretary P.S. Panikkar said that near this land another two acres of government land was also encroached upon. But authorities were not taking steps to evict the encroachers. He demanded the government to take action against the authorities who allowed the cutting down of 50 teak trees, 100 rubber trees and 10 cashew trees from the land.
