Guwahati: Assam Governor Lt. Gen (retd.) Ajai Singh has rejected the resignation by Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Amarjyoti Choudhury and requested him to continue in office. Prof. Choudhury tendered his resignation to the Governor, who is also the Chancellor, on Wednesday night citing his “inability to translate into reality the vision plan for raising the university to a world-class premier institution of higher learning.” He alleged “apathy” on the part of the State government to provide financial assistance. A Raj Bhavan release on Friday said the Governor assured the Vice-Chancellor and the university fraternity of “the utmost cooperation and support from the Chancellor’s office.” On Thursday, thousands of students abstained from classes, took out rallies and staged a blockade on National Highway 37 demanding that the government clarify its stand on the Rs. 181-crore Vision Document submitted by the Vice-Chancellor. The Post Graduate Students’ Union sent a fax message to the Chancellor, urging him not to accept Prof. Choudhury’s resignation. The Chancellor has convened a university Executive Council meeting for Monday. He directed that Education Minister Ripun Bora, Chief Secretary P.C. Sarma, Principal Secretary Finance H.S. Das and Higher Education Commissioner Alok Kumar be invited as special guests. Mr. Bora, however, described the Vice-Chancellor’s resignation as “very unfortunate” and “a bid to escape from his responsibilities.” He claimed that the annual grant for the university was doubled to Rs. 20 crore. As for the Vision Document, he said only the Union Human Resource Development Ministry could approve it.
