NEW DELHI: Grandmaster-elect G. N. Gopal resurrected his chances of qualifying for the World Cup after beating Vietnam’s Dao Thien Hai in the 10th and penultimate round of the Asian chess championship at Cebu City, in the Philippines, on Friday. Since the top-10 players qualify for the 128-player World Cup slated to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk in November, Gopal’s chances appeared bright as he moved to the seventh spot following the victory. Abhijit Kunte joined Gopal on 6.5 points after a draw with Indonesia’s Susanto Megaranto and was placed ninth with one round to follow.
The results (10th round, involving Indians): Abhijit Kunte (6.5) drew with Susanto Megaranto (Ina, 7); Surya Shekhar Ganguly (5.5) lost to Wen Yang (Chn, 7); Mohammad Al-Modiahki (Qat, 6) drew with G. Rohit (6); Li Chao (6.5) bt Sandipan Chanda (5.5); G. N. Gopal (6.5) bt Dao Thien Hai (Vie, 5.5); Rogelio Antonio Jr. (6.5) bt Neelotpal Das (5.5); Li Shilong (5.5) drew with Deepan Chakkravarthy (6); S. Arun Prasad (4.5) lost to Nguyen Anh Dung (Vie, 5.5); Parimarjan Negi (5) drew with Alexey Kim (Kor, 5); P. D. S. Girinath (5.5) bt Tu Hoang Thong (Vie, 4.5); Rustum Tolentino (Phi, 4) bt M. R. Lalith Babu (3); Stuart Fancy (Png, 1.5) lost to Lanka Ravi (3.5).
