Demand crime branch probe into death of Lopamudra

CUTTACK: More than 500 MBBS students of SCB medical college here took out a silent protest rally in the city on Friday and later demanded for a crime branch enquiry into the death of their friend Lopamudra Mohapatra whose body was found hanging in her hostel on Wednesday.

"We want crime branch enquiry into the death of Lopamudra and demand stringent actions are taken against the accused doctor whose name figured in the FIR filed by the victim’s relative," said SCB College Students’ Union president Sanjay Das.

The students also demanded a compensation of Rs 15 lakhs to the bereaved family members of the girl who was in third year of her MBBS course. "We plan to meet the Health Secretary in Bhubaneswar on Saturday and submit our memorandum of demands", the student leader said.

Earlier, the MBBS students took out the protest rally from their college campus and passing through the main thoroughfares of the city arrived at the Chandi Mandir. They offered prayers in the temple in memory of the departed soul before releasing the memorandum of demands to the Press.

Another group of close friends of Lopamudra went to her native place at Soro in Balasore district on the day and consoled the mourning family.

According to reports reaching here, the victim’s mother Sabitri Rout feels that her daughter had probably committed suicide due to torture and harassment leading to depression. She was upset for past few days, her mother has reportedly said. But the girl’s brother-in-law in his FIR has stated that Lopamudra was murdered and a teacher Braja Sundar Dash of the medical college was constantly harassing her.

Meanwhile, police on Thursday disclosed that they have received only one suicidal note from the hostel room where Lopamudra’s body was found hanging. "The note in the same page was addressed to her mother and to another Braja (Braja Behera), a class mate and close friend of the girl," said Mangalabag police inspector Devesh Biswal.

"Investigations into the case is progressing in right direction and we are waiting for the post mortem report to come", Biswal said adding that the police is now taking steps to obtain the ‘call chart’ from the relevant phone service to ascertain who made the calls to the girl and to whom the girl called on the day of the incident.
