Davangere records 65 per cent polling Harihar witnesses voter response of 75 per cent DAVANGERE: Re-polling has been ordered in booth number 63 in ward number 7 (Azad Nagar area) in Davangere following a serious lapse on the part of the presiding officer concerned. According to M.B. Dyaberi, Deputy Commissioner of Davangere district and district election officer, there were 520 voters registered in that particular booth. After 517 voters had exercised their franchise, the presiding officer was surprised to see over 100 voters still in the queue. He then realised he had been going by a list given to him by the agent of a political party and not by the official voters list issued by the district election office. Polling stoppedOn being informed, the Deputy Commissioner immediately rushed to the polling station and stopped the polling process. After consulting the State Election Commission, he ordered re-polling at the booth on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. He also said action would be taken against the presiding officer. Barring this incident and police caning mobs in Honnali and Harihar, elections to the six civic bodies in the district went off peacefully. Davangere recorded 65 per cent polling, Harihar 75 per cent, Honnali 72 per cent, Harpanahalli 65 per cent, Chennagiri 70 per cent and Jagalur 68 per cent. Peaceful
Assistant Commissioner of Harpanahalli division Latha Kumari told The Hindu that polling was peaceful in Jagalur and Harpanahalli. She said the police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse mobs in a couple of places. Assistant Commissioner of Davangere Janaki said elections in Davangere sub-division were incident-free.
