Elections conducted peacefully in Bellary

Staff Correspondent

Minor skirmishes between JD(S) and BJP workers

BELLARY: Barring minor skirmishes between workers of the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party in a couple of wards in Bellary city, elections to 10 urban civic bodies in the district, including the Bellary City Corporation, were by and large peaceful.

H.N. Satyanarayan Rao, Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range), Davangere, who has been camping here for the past three days and supervising security arrangements, told presspersons on Friday that timely intervention of the police had prevented situations in various wards from going out of control, including Avambhavi, Srirampuram colony and Lala Kaman area.

Argument

He said there was a heated argument between workers of the Janata Dal (S) and the BJP during the visit of Tourism Minister B. Sriramulu and the suspended BJP MLC, Janardhan Reddy, near Avambhavi on Friday.

A vehicle was damaged when someone threw a stone. “Barring this lone incident of stone-throwing and a couple of minor clashes, polling passed of peacefully in Bellary city,” he said.

The police had to use mild force to quell the clashing rival party workers.

Superintendent of Police Amrit Paul said about half-a-dozen vehicles registered in other States were detained for verification as people inside them were found to be carrying cash.

Moderate to brisk polling was recorded in the district with 65 to 70 per cent of voters exercising their franchise. In Bellary city, the percentage of polling was estimated to be between 55 and 60 per cent, according to Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer. Polling, which began on a dull note in the morning, gradually picked up by noon.
