Fresh case of dengue at AIIMS

Staff Reporter

Institute’s fourth year student tests positive for disease

“He has not contracted disease from Institute”

75 cases of dengue registered in city this season

NEW DELHI: A fourth year medical student at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here has tested positive for dengue and is being treated at the Institute.

Last year the Institute had registered the maximum number of dengue cases reported from any single organisation in the Capital. It reported 25 cases, including the death of a medical student at the Institute.

“A student from the Institute has been admitted to the hospital since September 21 and is currently undergoing treatment for dengue. He had been in Ghaziabad for a week before he reported in with dengue like symptoms. His blood was sent for testing and we found that he has dengue. The student is recovering well and will be discharged in a day or two,” said Dr. Bir Singh, Convenor of the Disease Outbreak Response Cell.

“We would like to highlight the fact that the student was not staying in the Institute premises a week prior to his having tested positive for dengue, hence he has not contracted the disease from the Institute.

“We have another fourth year medical student from the Institute who has been admitted with fever on September 24. He has not tested positive for dengue and is being treated for typhoid at the moment. There is no dengue scare at the Institute,” he added.

Dr. Singh pointed out that the New Delhi Municipal Council had recently commended the Institute for having managed to sustain a “mosquito-free” environment. Delhi has registered over 75 cases of dengue this season, with 20 cases being reported from outside the Capital.

“We have established a Disease Outbreak Response Cell that is organising public education activities to prevent mosquito breeding, apart from coordinating activities to ensure better patient care at AIIMS. This is a complete package that we have put together to prevent outbreak of the disease this year,” said Dr. Singh.
