Pilot parking project for Dilli Haat on the cards

Mechanism will be similar to that used in a giant wheel

NEW DELHI: The Capital’s citizens and tourists from far and near might soon have yet another reason to visit the popular Dilli Haat in South Delhi. The New Delhi Municipal Council has planned a pilot project to offer trouble-free parking there.

The NDMC’s Project Department proposes to install a small stack parking system which will accommodate nine cars in a ground space where only three can be parked conventionally. According to the NDMC, the pilot project is aimed at decongesting the road and improving the parking capacity.

An NDMC Project Department official said: “Though the project was discussed at the last Council meeting in September, certain observations were made due to which the proposal had to be withdrawn. However, now we have incorporated those observations into our project and it should be cleared once tabled again at the next meeting.” Elaborating on the use of stack technology in the project, an NDMC official said: “We plan to have a three-level stack parking system. The mechanism for running the system will be similar to that used in a giant wheel. There will be a car cabin structure which will move up automatically to where it finds a vacant lot.”

Meanwhile, the prevailing parking charges in Dilli Haat will be retained by the company to meet the running cost though it will be providing the parking structure free of cost for a period of six months. Simplex Projects has already approached the NDMC for installing the car park system as a pilot project and will be given 30 days from the award of work to finish the construction and installation work.
