73.2 per cent turnout in Chamarajanagar district

Chamarajanagar: The turnout of voters for elections to five urban local bodies in Chamarajanagar district on Friday was 73.2 per cent.

Elections were held for town panchayats of Yelandur and Hanur, city municipal councils of Kollegal and Chamarajanagar and Gundlepet Town Municipal Council.

Barring a few incidents of proxy voting, polling was peaceful in the district.

Voting commenced at a slow pace but picked up by afternoon. There was heated exchange of words among workers of various political parties in several laces over identity of voters.

Many candidates were complaining about irregularities in the voters’ list. They said that many voters were confused as their names were listed under wrong Wards. They urged the election authorities to take steps to avoid this as it would lead to proxy voting. A record 82 per cent polling was registered in Hanur Town Panchayat. This was followed by 75 per cent in Kollegal City Municipal Council and 72 per cent each in Gundlepet Town Municipal Council and Yelandur Town Panchayat. Chamarajanagar City Municipal Council registered 65 per cent polling.

A total of 468 candidates are in fray from 109 Wards.

Superintendent of Police Srikantappa told The Hindu that elaborate security steps were taken to ensure free and fair polling. Deputy Commissioner K. Vishwanath Reddy said that polling was peaceful in the district.
