‘Vital clues in murder case’

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Even as residents of the Capital’s Baljeet Nagar area live in constant fear of the mysterious “hammer man”, the police on Friday claimed to have gathered some vital clues to the murder of a young married woman in the early hours of Thursday.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) Rajesh Kumar said the police had come across some important leads that were being developed. They are questioning other occupants of the building in which the young victim Sangeeta lived along with her family.

“There are about 20 occupants who are being quizzed,” said Mr. Kumar, adding that some breakthrough was expected in a couple of days.

Interrogation on

The police have so far questioned about 50 people in connection with the murder. Efforts are being made to prepare a computer-generated portrait of the culprit on the basis of the description provided by Sangeeta’s mother. “We are trying to find out if the assailant was known to the victim,” said another police officer.

The incident came to light around 4 a.m. on Thursday when Sangeeta’s mother returned home after fetching water. She told the police that she had seen the killer sitting on a chair inside her daughter’s room, but he fled on seeing her. Sangeeta had married an accountant from Uttar Pradesh about three months ago but had been living with her family.

Terrorised people

Her murder has terrorised the locals, who allege that a serial killer is on the prowl. While the residents have been taking turns to patrol the area hoping to catch the killer before he strikes again, women are scared even to venture out of their homes to fetch water. The police have stepped up deployment in the area and urged the residents to maintain calm.
