Down memory lane in Pudukottai

M. Balaganessin

PUDUKOTTAI: The Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, went down memory lane to describe an incident that happened decades ago to drive home his struggle in public life for the growth of the party.

The very mention of Pudukottai reminded him of a number of DMK cadres, and above all a sad incident in his life.

Public meeting

Explaining his association with the cadres, particularly Arunachalam of Pudukottai, Mr. Karunanidhi said he had come to Pudukottai from Tiruvarur to address a public meeting organised by Arunachalam decades ago.

Wife’s death

Though his wife was in death bed at Tiruvarur, he had consented to come to Pudukottai.

In the absence of adequate transport facility in those days, he rushed back to Tiruvarur after the public meeting by a lorry, only to see his wife dead, he said in a voice choked with emotion.

“From then on a reference to either Pudukottai or Arunachalam instantly takes me back to the sad incident,” he added.

Mr. Karunanidhi said that he never forgot the sufferings and ordeals he had undergone as part of his public life and for the development of the party.

Takes a dig

“Many assume that after visiting Pudukottai, they can win over George Kottai (St. George Fort) and capture power, obviously hinting at the visit of the DMDK leader and matinee idol Vijaykant to participate in the third anniversary of his party in Pudukottai recently.

“But, in my public life, I had visited several ‘Kottais,’ including Palayamkottai (a reference to the prison),” he said.
