Udhagamandalam: A tree planting campaign organised by the Chairman, Udhagamandalam Municipal Council, R.Rajendran, concluded on Friday with a sapling being planted by the Nilgiris Collector Santosh K.Misra on Etienne’s road here.

Stating that the drive had commenced about two months ago, Mr.Rajendran added that 1,000 jacaranda saplings had been planted in different parts of the municipality.

Locations

These locations included a number of places such as Kotagiri Road, Coonoor Road, Church Hill Road, Lord Wenlock Road, Government Headquarters Hospital Road, Woodcock Road, Mysore Road, Government Botanical Garden Road, Red Cross Road, Ooty Town police station, Government Higher Secondary School, Shanthi Vijaya Girls Higher Secondary School and the ATC road side park.

All this had gone to increase the green cover in the hill station and give it a more attractive look, not only for residents but also for visitors who made a bee-line for it during the tourist season, every year. Pointing out that 500 saplings had been given free of cost by the District Forest Officer (Nilgiris North Division), Mohamed Iqbal Basha, he added that the balance had been obtained from Sim’s Park in Coonoor.

There had been help from several interested groups, to ensure that the young trees continued to flourish.

Indian Bank had provided five hundred tree-guards to protect the young plants, he said.

Among the others who had sponsored tree-guards were the Nahar group of hotels, the J.S.S.College of Pharmacy and the Merit Swiss Asian School of Hotel Management.

He added that all the saplings would be carefully nurtured. Casualities would be replaced.

Among those present was the Commissioner, Udhagamandalam Municipality Seeni Ajmal Khan.
