Archer back to a hero’s welcome

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: A tumultuous welcome was accorded at the railway station here on Friday to archer Mangal Singh Champia, the adopted son of Vijayawada, following his achievement in China that paved the way for his participation in the forthcoming Beijing Olympics in the individual recurve segment.

More than 150 sportspersons, a majority of whom were archers from the Volga Archery Academy where Mangal was groomed into a champion, received the celebrity along with those from the CBR Sports Academy and a few sports administrators.

Mangal was profusely garlanded and congratulated on bringing laurels to the country. The cavalcade in which Mangal travelled waded through the city’s thoroughfares from the railway station to IGMC Stadium.

Jharkhand-born Mangal, who has been residing in the city since 1999, qualified to be a part of the Indian contingent for the Beijing Olympics for his exploits in the Asian championship held at Chinese Taipei early this month. “This is a proud moment for Vijayawada and Krishna district, as Mangal has achieved an impossible task. We all wish him good luck for him to win the coveted medal and bring more laurels to Krishna district in particular and AP in general,” said District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar.

CBR Academy for Sports chairman Chalasani Balaramaiah promised to give Rs. 1 lakh to the young archer for his feat. “Talented sportspersons are a national treasure. Along with the Governments, it is the responsibility of the general public to protect and encourage them,” he said.
