NEW DELHI: The 22nd Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for 2006 has been awarded jointly to J.S. Bandukwala and Ram Puniyani for promoting communal harmony. Dr. Bandukwala is a professor of Physics at the M.S. University of Vadodara. His house was burnt down in the Godhra violence in 2002. He is also Vice-Chairman of the People’s Union of Civil Liberties. Dr. Puniyani is a professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Engineering, Powai. He is also a social activist noted for his secular writings. The award comprises a citation and a cash amount of Rs. 3 lakh. Sonia to present awardCongress president Sonia Gandhi will present the award on October 31, death anniversary of Indira Gandhi, according to Motilal Vora, member-Secretary of the Advisory Committee of the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration.
