LTTE bid foiled

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan military has claimed that at least 18 cadres of the Tamil Tigers were killed in fighting in the north and the east in the last 24 hours.

The Defence Ministry said here troops had killed at least six LTTE cadres on Friday in clashes at the defence line in general area Narikkulam, north of Mannar.

It said the LTTE elements attempting to advance through the forward defence line had drawn heavy gunfire from the troops.

No casualty

“According to ground sources, troops intercepted the terrorists at around 9:30 a.m. Intercepted LTTE communication has revealed that terrorists suffered heavy casualties. No casualties were caused to own troops.”

Separately, the military said the elite sea borne squadron on Thursday foiled an LTTE attempt to evacuate its cadres trapped in Peraru and Kumpurupiddi jungles. Over a dozen cadres were killed. It said clashes erupted when the naval patrol craft intercepted 20 boats proceeding towards Pulmoddai. “It has been revealed through intercepted LTTE communication that a self-styled LTTE ‘Lieutenant Colonel’ Nishanthan was also among the killed.”
