New Delhi: Amidst the hoopla over India’s Twenty20 win and the subsequent showering of rewards on cricketers, State Bank of India has come forward to reward the hockey players. According to a release, the country’s premier bank will gift Rs. 5 lakh each to the members of the Asia Cup winning hockey team. It was declared at a meeting here on Friday. The SBI Group Chairman O.P. Bhatt said, “It is indeed a matter of national pride that our young players in the national hockey team have lifted the coveted Asia Cup. They have shown great determination, exemplary teamwork and utmost dedication to the game. The team has brought glory to the country and today we salute them with a small gift from the State Bank family.” India beat South Korea 7-2 in the final in Chennai to win the Asia Cup. Despite its spectacular performance, the release added, the hockey team had not got the due appreciation. SBI’s gesture holds a special significance in this context. — Special Correspondent
