Vadodara: It was a repeat act that no one wanted. Close on the heels of the washed-out first one-dayer at Ahmedabad on Wednesday, the second one-dayer between India ‘A’ and South Africa ‘A’ at the Reliance Cricket Stadium here on Friday, also proved to be a non-starter. Though there was bright sunshine, the relative rise in temperature was not enough to dry a ground that had wet spots on both ends, right on the bowlers’ run-up and square off the wicket. The rains over the last four days had taken a toll. Umpires Sameer Bandekar and M.S.S. Ranawat, after repeated inspections every hour since morning, finally called off the match at 1.30 p.m. “The area where the bowler lands during the delivery stride was still damp. It was not safe and it could have caused a twisted ankle. We tried our best and thought we could somehow have a Twenty20 game but that was not to be,” said Bandekar. Mohammad Kaif’s men will now take on the visiting side led by Boeta Dippenaar in the third and final one-dayer at Rajkot on Sunday. Hopefully the rains will stay away. — Principal Correspondent
