CHENNAI: Promising talent Ajay Rau returned home from London after competing in two tough sailing competitions in Paton and Weymouth (2012 Olympic venue). The Chennai lad struggled in the first event, which was the UK qualifier for the 2008 World championship, but finished 35th out of 45 boats. At Weymouth, Ajay was in the midst of some of the best sailors in the world (the event in fact was used as a trials by some countries to select their respective sailor for the 2008 Olympic Games. Finished 47thAjay finished a fighting 47th overall in his first ever regatta with wind speeds of 30 to 35 knots. “It was good to come back to Weymouth for the second time and experience these dangerous conditions which could occur at the 2012 Olympic Games. I secured a 12th position in one of the nine races. “This has given me confidence, as I work towards peaking for the 2012 Olympics,” said Ajay, who is sponsored by Mittal Champions Trust, Amm Foundation and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. Training in France and another tournament in Spain are part of his plans ahead.
