TIRUCHI: The Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOI) should join hands with government bodies in conducting mass awareness programmes on health hazards of noise pollutions and medical workshops for ENT surgeons, Thanjavur Medical College Dean R.M Natarajan has said. Inaugurating the three-day, 11th State annual conference of AOI here on Friday, Dr. Natarajan said that under the banner of ‘Vazhvoli thittam,’ ENT camps were conducted for school students periodically at K. A. P. Viswantham Government Medical College Hospital here and more such programmes would be held in future. Organising president V. Navaneethakrishnan pleaded for starting an ENT theatre at the Government Hospital here. Releasing the souvenir, veteran surgeon and former AOI president S. Kameswaran observed that innovation in technologies have played a key role in recent medical breakthrough and minimised surgical complications in recent times. 25 districts identifiedUnder the National Programme of Prevention and Rehabilitation of Deafness, the pilot project of Union Ministry of Health, 25 districts in the State have been identified to medically rehabilitate the hearing impaired and develop institutional capacity by providing equipment support for health care centres, said K. He inaugurated the science exhibition with over 30 stalls displaying medical equipment and surgical instruments. After launching the Family Service Scheme (FSS) for ENT surgeons, the vice-president of Tamil Nadu Medical Council M. S. Ashraf said that a similar scheme that was launched by Indian Medical Association received a great response and the FSS would go a long way in encouraging ENT surgeons across the country to join AOI. Medical associations, Dr. Ashraf noted, should take up social responsibilities by organising awareness programmes and workshops for students to dispel the myths about medical treatments and counsel them on occupational health problems. Ananthagiri, the first ENT surgeon in the district, released a CD on ENT surgeons directory. AOI State president S. Gnanatilakan presided.
